SUMMARY: Performs lab services to patients. Gives patient care and interacts with patient as needed and requested by physician. Has a working knowledge of medical necessity issues, CLIA/COLA and OSHA requirements. Has knowledge to create procedure manual and proficiency testing compliant with CLIA/COLA regulations. Ability to revise laboratory procedures to make and remain complaint with CLIA/COLA regulations. Promotes a positive attitude and working environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Test Ordering in Quest 360
Knowledge of insurance and account bill
Patient Education or instruction regarding specimen collection for prep of certain tests
Gathering correct lab orders on patients by matching name, date of birth, Athena Chart number, and physician
Test order retention of two years (requisitions and results)
Understand universal precautions
Check physician orders in Athena for accurate orders
Understand specimen rejection when tubes are collected.
Help patients to prevent contaminated urine specimens when clean catch is authorized
Preparation and performance of Vein punctures-includes site selection, proper cleaning techniques, adequate technique, and correct specimen handling.
Properly labeled specimens that include name, date of birth, Athena chart number, and time of collection with tech initials
Having working knowledge of test menu offered or how to find information if not readily available (reference lab test menus and in house testing)
Documentation- keeping log/logging control data on paper and appropriate manuals
Perform daily QC on all required testing devices, and ensure adequate performance before patient testing
Understand corrective actions need to be taken on analyzers when performance is in adequate (repeats on CBCs, chemistry repeats, urine correlation, and A1C)

Knowledge of Reagents and proper storage
Retention of testing and printouts from Analyzers - 2 years
Accurate and complete test records that include name, date, specimen information, and testing personnel
Proficiency Testing rotated among everyone
Using proper safety and infection control measures (infectious waste, soiled items, sharps containers
Alert physician of any alert values called by reference labs within timely manner.
Keep correct labeling of patient specimens in pour off tubes, aliquots, urine cups, etc.
Chart orders correctly in Athena with proper diagnosis reviewed Storage of specimens for future add on testing and general purpose use
How to contact patient for recollection of specimens when needed and inform Dr/Nurse requesting add on test
Give out correct test reports to nurses/physicians within timely manner
Correct incorrect test reports and keep both copies for two years
Keep pathological specimen reports for ten years in separate folder
Direct supervision in processing, test performance, result reporting, or consultation or director review prior to patient results being reported.
Order correct testing in Quest system and check orders before sending out at the end of the day

***He or She will recognize and respond to emergency situations; knows location and use of emergency equipment and how to care for swooning patients.
***The employee will be punctual, versatile, and professional appearing.
***The employee will also be responsible for keeping continuing education documentation for laboratory procedures in personnel file located in the lab.
